Liverpool beat Aston Villa 3-1Mo Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Stephan Bajcetic scored as the winners moved up to sixth in the table. PSV Eindhoven announced on Monday the transfer to Liverpool of Dutch striker Cody Gakpo, who joins Jurgen Klopp's side to bolster their attack with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota out injured.

"The 23-year-old striker will leave imminently for England, where he will undergo the necessary formalities before the transfer is completed," PSV added. The 23-year-old striker will arrive in England shortly to undergo medical tests. PSV were already resigned to losing Gakpo, who had become one of the world's hottest players in recent months, but did not want to lose him for less than 50 million euros. The Netherlands striker will sign a long-term contract with Liverpool.

The Liverpool manager sees progress versus Man City

"Both clubs have not made any announcement about the transfer price, but it is a record transfer for PSV," said the Eindhoven club's general manager Marcel Brands. The English press is talking about between 40 and 50 million euros (£35.4 million to £44.3 million).

Gakpo, 23, starred in the opening stages of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, scoring in the first three games to help his side reach the quarter-finals. He scored the opener in the 2-0 win over Senegal near the end. He was also on target to put the team ahead against Ecuador, a match they would eventually draw.

Manchester United also wanted Gakpo

Gakpo completed his role as an 'unblocker' by scoring the first of two goals against Qatar. PSV's announcement comes at a time when there was speculation that Manchester United had a pre-agreement with Gakpo, one of the players who shone particularly brightly at the World Cup. United would have thought of the Dutchman to fill the gap left by Cristiano Ronaldo's departure from the club.
