Here's the lowdown on the Reds' next three European opponents.

Liverpool face Napoli in the first leg on 7 September and the return leg on 1 November. The Reds will face the Italians for the third time in five seasons in this edition of the Champions League.

Liverpool have played six official matches against the Napoli club, with two meetings in the Europa League group stage in 2010-11 and a further four encounters in Europe's elite competition in the same round.

Liverpool have visited the Stadio San Paolo - now renamed the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona - on three separate occasions and have yet to record a win.

After a goalless draw in Italy in 2010, Steven Gerrard scored a hat-trick at Anfield to secure a 3-1 win in the return leg. It took eight years for the two sides to meet again, before they met in successive editions of the Champions League.

The Merseyside side were beaten 1-0 by a late effort from Lorenzo Insigne in 2018, but claimed a crucial 1-0 win at Anfield, with Mohamed Salah's goal and a stunning late save from Alisson Becker sealing their place in the last 16. A year later, Dries Mertens and Fernando Llorente scored in Italy, before Mertens and Dejan Lovren scored in a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Qualification

Napoli qualified for this season's competition after finishing third in the Serie A 2021-22 standings, with Luciano Spalletti guiding them back into the Champions League in his first tenure. Last season they reached the first knockout round of the Europa League, but lost 5-3 on aggregate to Barcelona.

New signing Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has made an immediate impact this season, while Napoli have also brought in Tanguy Ndombele on loan from Tottenham.
