Wataru Endo Picks Out His Standout Game as a Liverpool Player
Liverpool FC have demonstrated their prowess in a series of thrilling matches over the past year and a half.
Under the management of Jürgen Klopp in his final season and now Arne Slot, the Reds have created unforgettable moments on the pitch.
Since his arrival in the summer of 2023, Wataru Endo has played a significant role in these encounters. The Japanese international, who arrived at Anfield as a surprise signing from Stuttgart, quickly won the hearts of the fans, establishing a reputation as a hardworking and tenacious midfielder.
Despite limited appearances under Slot, Endo remains a crucial part of the Liverpool squad. Following his 59th appearance for the club in the recent victory over Lille, Endo reflected on his time at Liverpool and highlighted his favourite match so far.
Endo’s return to the starting line-up has been noteworthy. Originally tipped for a summer exit, Slot’s initial assessment suggested the 31-year-old didn’t quite fit his vision for a more defensive midfield role. Nevertheless, Endo’s resurgence has been palpable. Although opportunities have been limited, he has consistently delivered solid performances in the minutes he has been given.
For the Anfield faithful, Endo’s excellence is no revelation. His standout performance came during the 1-1 draw against Manchester City in March 2024, a match many consider to be when he truly made his mark at the club.
Unsurprisingly, this game stands out as his favourite, as he expressed in an appearance on the Wataru Endo podcast. "I'd say against Manchester City or Arsenal at Anfield last season. Probably City," he commented. "I enjoyed that game a lot because of the level that was on display. The match isn't created by just 11 players, but 22. Everyone needs to be at a high level in that game. That's the reason why I enjoyed it, because I always dreamt of playing in such high-level matches."
There are undoubtedly multiple justifications for Endo choosing the Manchester City clash as his favourite. He delivered what was arguably his best performance in a Liverpool shirt.
In a game where the team was depleted, Endo stood out, delivering a dominant midfield display while effectively nullifying the talents of Ballon d'Or contender, Rodri.
The praise was forthcoming, with former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch describing Endo’s performance as ‘incredible’, cementing his status in the hearts of Liverpool fans.
