Action returned for Liverpool in the Premier League after a long three-week break, as Jurgen Klopp and his players welcomed a tricky Brighton side to Anfield who throughout the 90 minutes evidenced one of the many shortcomings that have dogged the Reds since the start of the 2022-2023 season, with former Spurs boss Tim Sherwood pointing out the errors of one specific player among a handful of players.

Clearly this was not the Reds' best return to action on the pitch, for while there were some standout performances from Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino, there were also some blunders in the first third of the pitch, with England's Trent Alexander-Arnold being dominated throughout, and some noted inefficiencies from Dutchman Virgil van Dijk.

Those defensive shortcomings were highlighted by former Tottenham Hotspur manager Tim Sherwood, who, speaking to Premier League Productions, blamed the Netherlands international defender for the goal that robbed his side of the chance to get back to winning ways since 31 August when they beat Newcastle at the last minute.

"He just sticks his left foot out for the clearance and the ball goes underneath him, it's a poor mistake for someone of his quality". While such errors may have been largely confined to the Reds' No 4, that late Brighton goal was a collective team error, for while van Dijk was in a position where he could have deflected the ball away from disaster, his team-mates to his right also failed to react well, allowing him the time and space needed to beat Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Van Dijk left many doubts in defences

The mistake by van Dijk in that play is just a reflection of how poorly the defence played in this game, and Jurgen Klopp has a lot of work ahead of him if he does not want to be caught out in his next UEFA Champions League game against Rangers, a team that will surely use the 90 minutes against Brighton as a basis to plan their strategies and try to inflict their second defeat of the competition on the Merseyside side from home.
