Manchester City are shocked by allegations of financial irregularities brought by the Premier League

Manchester City are shocked by allegations of financial irregularities brought by the Premier League and hope the investigation will end the matter "once and for all". The English club released a statement on Monday after it emerged that the Premier League has accused City of breaching around 100 of the league's financial regulations since 2009.

"Manchester City is shocked by the allegation of this breach of Premier League rules, especially given the assistance and vast amount of material we have given to the Premier League," City said in a statement. "The club welcomes the independent commission's investigation, to consider impartially the irrefutable evidence that exists. As such, we look forward to this bringing the matter to an end once and for all."

City was acquired by The Abu Dhabi United Group in 2008, and since then the club has won six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and six League Cups, as well as finishing runners-up in the Champions League in 2021. In a statement on Monday, the club said: "Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of Premier League rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and wealth of detailed materials that have been provided to the league".

Liverpool would have 22 titles

According to the Anfield Edition Twitter account, the possible punishments for Manchester City are as follows: Points deduction(s), Expulsion from the league, Trophy cancellation, European ban, Transfer ban, Heavy fine(s). It should be remembered that Manchester City have had an even rivalry with Liverpool in recent years. On only three occasions have they beaten the Reds in the Premier League by the narrowest of margins. The first was in the 2013-2014 season. Then in 2017-2018 and the most recent was in 2021-2022. With these three new titles, Liverpool would reach 22 and surpass Manchester United's 20 and become the biggest in England.
