This is what Cody Gakpo did on social media after his double that worries Nunez

The Dutchman had a very good night and threatens Nunez's starting place

The Dutchman had a very good night and threatens Nunez's starting place

The defeat in Toulouse had to prove that it was just a mirage, and Cody Gakpo came out wearing the star jersey. The one Mohamed Salah usually wears. Two goals and a penalty set up by the Dutchman, as well as the other two goals by his teammates in the attacking trident, turned what could have been a trap game for Liverpool into a mere formality at Anfield. The 4-0 win over LASK, coupled with the 0-0 draw between Toulouse and Union Saint-Gilloise, ensured Jürgen Klopp's men secured top spot in Group E. The Reds are through to the last 16 of the Europa League after a group stage in which, with the final matchday to go, they showed they have the attacking prowess of a Champions League side but a defensive performance that could play into their hands on the road to the final in Dublin.

No matter how many rotations Jürgen Klopp introduced in the eleven, a forward line of Mohamed Salah, Cody Gakpo and Luis Díaz can start any game, in any competition, for the Anfield side. And it was the Reds attacking trio who settled the game, and qualification for the last 16, in the first quarter of an hour. Luis Diaz started the 1-0 lead with an opening down the right flank and Luis Diaz himself finished it off with a header from inside the box. Just four minutes later, however, Liverpool's '7' set up Mohamed Salah to set up Cody Gakpo at the far post.

In the blink of an eye, Liverpool, immensely superior to the Austrian side, had the game wrapped up for the fifth matchday of the group stage. Thomas Sageder's side's counter-attacks were the only thing that troubled the Anfield outfit. And the gap on the scoreboard could have been even wider had Kostas Tsimikas' shot not been tipped over the crossbar.

Posting on social media

After the match, Liverpool's social media published a photo of Cody Gakpo with the German manager Jurgen Klopp, where you could see the closeness between the two, something that shows the union in the team, but also that Klopp is satisfied with his performance and can think of him as a starter for Liverpool's next game against Fulham on Sunday, instead of Darwin Nunez who came on Thursday and missed a very clear goal scoring chance.
