Just before the new post-Brexit restrictions to prohibit under-18 entries from abroad went into effect in 2020, Liverpool acquired the young Bajcetic from the Spanish club. The 18-year-quick old's rise through the youth ranks and current status as a full-time member of the first squad after making five appearances so far has vindicated their decision to move quickly with a deal.
Srdan Bajcetic, his father, is a youth coach at Celta Vigo. He was a midfielder who played the majority of his career in Spain, Portugal, and Serbia, All of those have played in the midfield, but Bajcetic signed with the Reds as a center-back, as explained by academy director Alex Inglethorpe, He told the Liverpool Echo that:
"as graceful as he was as a center-back, we wondered whether he'd have more potential if he moved up a line." “Interestingly, Stefan told me that his former player father had always predicted that he would become a midfielder when we chatted around that time.” When we chose to relocate Stefan, "I don't think we were pushing against a locked door.
Working with Stefan is a real pleasure. For him, it was of no concern. He is progressing quite nicely. Bajcetic, who had little time at all to adapt to the demands of the No. 6 post, has definitely benefited from the switch from defensive midfield to center-back, that was evident in his performances against Ajax and Napoli in the Champions League…
As well as most recently against Derby in the Carabao Cup, the young player was always eager to receive the ball and look ahead, the path would have almost certainly been stopped had Bajcetic continued on as a center-back, therefore Inglethorpe's early judgment was beneficial, Instead, he is an intriguing choice at a position that might undergo a change inside Jurgen Klopp's team, at least in terms of competition for Fabinho.
