Liverpool responded on Sunday with a dramatic 4-3 win over Fulham on the brink of the drop, as close as the scoreline reflected (4-3) or even closer, as they overturned a 2-3 deficit in the 87th and 88th minutes with goals from Wataru Endo and Alexander-Arnold. The value of the win, in a game as unpredictable as the outcome was, in the way it resurfaced, is substantial, because it keeps them firmly in contention for the Premier League, just two points behind leaders Arsenal, and because it extends an impressive run at Anfield in that competition: they have not lost there for more than a year, since October 2022. That's 19 games unbeaten at home.
The seventh consecutive home win to respond to their recent inconsistency, in which they had conceded three draws away from home. It was also the seventh winless visit in a row for Fulham, who have only managed to win one of their last six games, but maintain a reassuring cushion above the relegation zone.
The first half ended 2-2. The perfect description of the two teams' goalscoring. Not of the football. Nor of the breakneck pace. Nor of the chances, which were practically the same as the goals between Liverpool, more dominant, and Fulham, resilient, active and capable of getting up twice from behind.
During Sunday's game against Fulham, the Japanese shone and showed why Jurgen Klopp signed him for 19 million from Bundesliga side Stuttgart. There was one move in which he made a mockery of the Portuguese Joao Palhinha who had been linked with Liverpool and for whom Fulham were asking 80 million, so the Japanese saved them that excessive outlay.
