Liverpool and Napoli played out a back-and-forth duel as the Champions League group stage came to a close. Both qualified for the last 16, but both battled for top spot. After a fierce contest, it was not until the final minutes that Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez scored to make it 1-0 and 2-0, respectively. Both Alisson Becker and Alex Meret had their work cut out throughout the contest. The Brazilian '1′ was even given a scare by Leo Ostigard's goal.

However, the intervention of technology was key in cancelling out the goal and the scoreless score remained on the scoreboard at the historic Anfield stadium. Just when it looked as though the game might end goalless, substitute Darwin Núñez came on for the second half and got on the scoresheet. From a corner kick, the Uruguayan headed between the Napoli defenders. The Italian goalkeeper was able to keep out the shot from the 'charrúa'.

However, goalkeeper Meret left the ball loose in the six-yard box. Then, 'Mo' Salah reacted to push the ball into the net, despite another block from the visiting keeper. What's more, there were doubts as to who scored the goal, but the Champions League organisers awarded it to the African.

However, the former Benfica man got his revenge in the closing stages of the game with another controversial action. From another corner kick, Van Dijk's shot was deflected in. Meret made a save and the ball sailed over the goal line. Darwin stretched out his foot to add and make it 2-0. On this occasion, the VAR review went through for a possible advanced position which was ruled out.

Salah close to matching Dalglish

Mo Salah is now the top scorer in the Champions League this season on 7 goals. He's equalled Steven Gerrard's record of 41 European goals for Liverpool.  He's 4 goals behind Dalglish for Liverpool in 217 fewer games and he's scored in 5 straight Uefa Champions League games for the first time.
