The tension is very high for Liverpool at the moment after a poor start to the 2022-2023 Premier League season, which is why some good news could lighten the load that some elements of the squad are currently under, with recognition being that extra incentive that could help them in the face of some very complicated weeks both in the English league and in the Europa League.

Although it may be minimal, the Northwest Football Awards 2022 could be the vindication that two of Jurgen Klopp's first-choice players urgently need, with the award being a reminder of their constant effort and the best level they showed last year when, alongside their teammates, they came within a whisker of maximum glory in various competitions.

Mohamed Salah is nominated for the Premier League player of the season for his incredible contributions to a 2021-2022 campaign full of pure drama as the Reds came so close to being league champions once again. The Egyptian during that footballing year was able to break the net 23 times and generate a total of 14 assists, earning him the Golden Boot, which he shared with Heung-min Son.

England's Harvey Elliott is also in contention at the Northwest Football Awards, as the youngster was shortlisted in the Rising Star of the Season category from midfield. Elliott appears unlikely to win given the limited playing time he has received thanks to an ankle injury early last season, however, his nomination alone speaks volumes about a promising player who has proven he is capable of starting for a team of such stature.

Reds must win against Ajax

As these awards are decided by fan voting, perhaps the influence of the current campaign will play a part in the voting, with both Salah and Elliott missing out on points for the dreadful start they and their teammates have made to the season. The awards will be presented at a ceremony to be held on Monday 7 November, with less than two months to go until we know who people think were the best footballers.
