Jürgen Klopp's Liverpool are no less than 10 points away from the Champions League zone. The same goes for Chelsea, who face the Reds at Anfield this Saturday. Two of the 'Big Six' of English football are going through an ordeal in the Premiership, aggravated in the case of Liverpool by the image offered last Saturday in the 3-0 win over Brighton. It was, by Klopp's own admission, Liverpool's worst performance since the German manager has been in charge.
One consolation for Reds fans is that in March 2021 Liverpool were 8 points adrift of the Champions League and finished 3rd. Currently 3rd placed Newcastle (with 38 points to Klopp's 28) have played one more game than the Reds. Liverpool's deep crisis in the Premiership has coincided with the departure of Sadio Mané, a member of the legendary trident alongside Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, who joined Bayern last summer. These may be some of the reasons for Liverpool's crisis:
Qatar's new owners and the player set to leave Liverpool after the Wolverhampton match
Salah has had enough of FSG, low blow for owners to leave Liverpool
As in the aforementioned 2020-21 season, Liverpool are being plagued by injuries. Then mostly in their defensive line, now in attack. An attack without an emblematic player like Mané. Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz, Roberto Firmino, in the dry dock and on Saturday also Darwin Nunez. At the back, Virgil van Dijk is also injured. In midfield, Arthur Melo.
Klopp himself says Liverpool's success in 2021-22 is why his players are paying for the effort of last season, in which the Reds played 63 games. They played in three finals, two won (the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup, both against Chelsea) and one lost (the Champions League final against Real Madrid).
