Joel Matip's injury is more serious than expected after leaving the game against Fulham

The bad news for Liverpool ahead of Wednesday's Premier League round 15 away game against Sheffield United was confirmed as Jurgen Klopp told a press conference that Joel Matip's injury is more serious than expected after leaving the game against Fulham on Sunday and he will be sidelined for a lengthy period of time.

The Cameroonian defender was unable to finish the game against Fulham due to a muscle problem and joined the list of injured players that includes Alisson, Diogo Jota as well as Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic, although the latter have been sidelined for a long time due to serious injuries and it is not known when they will be able to return, although it seems that it will be until next year.

Klopp on Matip: "I don't know exactly but it doesn't look good. Scan not done yet but it's not great. I spoke to him straight away and it's not good. Diogo Jota was running outside y'day on his birthday. Not back in team training. Alisson is closer but not for tomorrow."

The options to replace it

Although there are options in the Liverpool squad to replace Matip such as Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Koante and Jarrel Quansah himself, German manager Jurgen Klopp could turn to an emergency signing of a player to give him experience in a position as important as defence. The options are players who can be given short contracts such as Momo Sakho or even Phil Jones himself, as well as an option that Klopp knows very well such as the German Shkodran Mustafi.
