The Pole was one of the stars of the Istanbul miracle

The fans chanting You'll Never Walk Alone, Steven Gerrard lifting the trophy, Jerzy Dudek saving penalties. It is now more than 18 years since the Champions League final at Istanbul's Atatürk Olympic Stadium between Milan and Liverpool was one of the most epic and memorable finals in the tournament's almost 70-year history.

On 25 May 2005, the English side came from 3-0 down at half-time. The historic Steven Gerard scored the first goal to give the Reds life in the match. Vladimir Smicer and Xavi Alonso sent the game into extra time, and from there to penalties. From the spot-kick, Poland's Jerzy Dudek finally got the better of Rossoneri star striker Andriy Shevchenko, and Liverpool's feat was not only immortalised as the "Miracle of Istanbul".

Poland's Jerzy Dudek is now 50 years old and retired in 2011 with Real Madrid, although he has never shone as brightly as he did with Liverpool.  He occasionally broadcasts for Polish broadcaster TVP and also gives interviews on sites such as Poland's Canal Plus Sport. He also travels around Europe and in his spare time he plays golf, one of his great passions.

After retiring, he trained as a driver and turned professional. In 2013 he raced in the Volkswagen Castrol Cup, a competition in which touring cars were raced. In 2015 the tournament was cancelled after several editions, but Dudek continued racing. He raced in the Dubai 24 Hours in 2016 and the Barcelona 24 Hours, which he finished 42nd overall. The former goalkeeper has also written a book based on his football career, A Royal Road. In the book he refers to Lionel Messi, who he says "was false and provocative, just like Barcelona and Josep Guardiola".
