Brazilian full-back Dani Alves has revealed that more than a decade ago, when he was still playing for Sevilla, he reached an agreement with Liverpool and came very close to joining the Anfield outfit. Alves, who is now in legal trouble, said in an interview with FourFourTwo magazine that the deal between Sevilla and Liverpool "was closed", although it was not finalised and he ended up joining FC Barcelona.

I had an agreement with Liverpool, but I don't know why at the last minute it didn't materialise. The truth is that I don't know why it didn't happen; I didn't lead the negotiations. I had other people representing me at the time," said the Brazilian. The English side, then coached by Rafa Benítez, opted for England's Jermaine Pennant and Spain's Álvaro Arbeloa after failing to land Alves.

"Something similar happened later in my career with Chelsea and Real Madrid. But in the end it all worked out well for the 'culés' and for me, as I was able to write a wonderful story at Camp Nou," said the Brazilian, who won six LaLiga titles, three Champions League titles and four Copa del Rey trophies with Barcelona, among many others. "I wanted to win titles that, if I had stayed at Sevilla, I wouldn't have won. We were close, but I don't like to stay close. Six months before the market opened they told me about Barça's interest and I said I wanted to play for them," he revealed.

Problems with the law

Dani Alves, the player with the most titles in the history of world football, has been in the spotlight in recent hours after being accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the night of 30-31 December in a nightclub in Barcelona. The judge, who has sent him to pre-trial detention without bail, continues to investigate the facts until the day of the final trial.
