Liverpool have completed the signing of Dutch striker Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven. Gakpo, 23, who scored three World Cup goals, will officially join the Premier League club on Sunday when the transfer window begins. PSV announced on Monday that it had agreed the player's transfer for an unspecified fee and described it as "a record" for the Dutch club.

"This is a great club for me to come and try to show what I can (do) and try to help the team achieve more beautiful moments than they have achieved in the last few years," Gakpo told Liverpool's website. Gakpo had 55 goals and 50 assists in 159 appearances for PSG. Codi Gakpo was one of the standout players at the World Cup. Now, the striker appears to have opened the winter transfer window with a move from PSV Eindhoven to Liverpool.

The Dutch club announced that it had agreed to a transfer for an undisclosed fee in order to loan the national team attacker. "It is imminent that the 23-year-old attacker will leave for England as soon as he completes the necessary formalities to complete the transfer," PSV said in a statement. Marcel Brands, PSV's general manager, described the deal as a "record transfer" for the club.

With the transfer window not starting until 1 January, the confirmation of the proposed transfer came as a surprise. Reports had indicated that Manchester United were the team to recruit Gakpo. Gakpo scored three goals for the Netherlands, who were knocked out by Argentina in the World Cup quarter-finals.

"Liverpool is a bigger club than United."

"Things can change, but Cody has everything it takes to become a star," Dutch coach Louis van Gaal said. "He has a wonderful personality to be a star player, because he has an open mind about everything. On his unveiling as a new Reds player, Gakpo had this to say: "I know Man Utd were really interested in me, but I didn't want to downgrade from PSV, who are a bigger club. I only wanted Liverpool."
