Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is expecting a "real one-off feeling" when Liverpool play their first game at Anfield of 2022-23 on Monday night against Crystal Palace. The Reds are looking for their first win of the new Premier League season after a 2-2 draw in London with Fulham last weekend.
"It can happen every year, but you can never get bored of this feeling. There is always a different atmosphere in and around the pitch. You can feel the excitement and there is a real sense of occasion. I've been here long enough to know exactly what Anfield will be like, and the fact that we start with a night game only adds to the anticipation," said Henderson.
The captain reiterated the need for Liverpool to improve on their opening day performance and wants the team to feed off the energy surrounding the first home game of the campaign.
"The first home game of a new season is always one of those games that anyone lucky enough to be involved in football can't wait for. It was the same when I was a kid, going to games with my dad, and it applies even more now that I have the privilege of playing for Liverpool," he says.
According to Henderson, players, staff and fans alike look forward to these types of days to make the most of them and to give the latter some satisfaction. While he accepts that the Premier League did not start as they had hoped against Fulham, regardless of the result, there are always lessons to be learned.
"Some aspects of our performance were good, especially as the game went on, and we could have won in the end, but there are other areas that require fine-tuning or absolute improvement," he said.
