After the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the Premier League returned to its usual development as well as several leagues around the world. Liverpool, one of England's historic teams, returned to action with the aim of reversing the situation in which it finds itself, since it has not obtained good results. The Reds have been without Luis Diaz due to injury, so they signed Cody Gakpo to strengthen their squad. However, Igor Biscan, a former player of the club, said that both players will be fundamental in the resurrection of the squad.

The Colombian joined the Anfield outfit almost a year ago after his stellar performances for Porto of Portugal. Despite speculation about his adaptation to Portuguese football, Diaz surprised everyone as if he had been playing for the club for years and understood Jurgen Klopp's idea perfectly despite the language barrier. With dribbles and goals he paid for his arrival and won the hearts of the 'red' fans. Despite playing the last six months of the 2021-22 season, he managed to score six goals in 26 games.

Cody Gakpo not to start against Brighton and Sadio Mané's decision to return

In the summer transfer window, the departure of Senegal's Sadio Mané gave him an even greater chance of getting more minutes. However, an injury cut short his aspirations to continue to excel in Europe. He has not played an official match since October, when he tried to return, but suffered pain and even had to undergo surgery. Liverpool confirmed that he will not be able to return to the pitch until the middle of March this year. In the midst of his recovery, the 'Reds' took the opportunity to sign Cody Gakpo, a Dutchman who starred and scored for his national team at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

While many see him as a replacement for the Colombian for others, the Dutchman could have good chemistry with Diaz on the pitch. As Igor Biscan, a former Croatian player who came through the club, remarked: "(Gakpo) is someone who comes full of desire to achieve something special and usually that makes everyone else step up their game. And then when you look at the return of Luis Diaz, the two of them could have a big impact for Liverpool this season."

Liverpool look to bounce back

It now remains to be seen whether the Anfield outfit can bounce back, as they are currently sixth with 28 points. It is worth noting that after the World Cup they have two wins (Aston Villa and Leicester City) and one defeat (Brentford).
