Darwin Núñez closed 2022 with a very good performance in Liverpool's 2-1 win over Leicester at Anfield Road, although he was unable to end his run without scoring. The Uruguayan, as well as putting in a huge physical effort, was once again moving all over the front line and was a constant scourge when he was searched for pace.

At the start of the match, Leicester took a surprise 1-0 lead, but an overflow of the Uruguayan ended with a great cross back to Mohamed Salah, although the Egyptian did not define well and the shot went wide.

With so many of Nunez's failings, the Anfield gesture that surprised everyone

The equaliser came when Alexander Arnold's cross was met by Faes trying to clear. Shortly after came a key play. Darwin Núñez broke at speed, found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper and scored in a remarkable way, but the shot hit the post and on the rebound, Faes sent it into his own net to make it 2-1.

In the second half, the Uruguayan was at his best again when in the 52nd minute he played a spectacular through ball to Mohamed Salah, who again failed to finish and missed a great chance. Darwin had another clear chance with a shot that hit the roof of the net. He then set up Salah again for the goal, but the Egyptian was unable to finish.

TAA backs him

One of his team-mates, Trent Alexander Arnold came out to defend Nunez after his last three games without goals and with many misses: "You'll get people who will say he's missed a few chances and he's missed one-on-ones and maybe he should have tucked the second goal away, but he's getting himself in those positions and when the goals do come. I'm sure they will come like London buses! We're just waiting for that but he's a fantastic lad and he's an outstanding player as well."
