The Premier League accused Manchester City of financial irregularities in its accounts. As the competition explained in a statement, Manchester City failed to provide "truthful information" on different issues such as the manager's salary for four years, the club's income, including sponsorship, and also failed to comply with UEFA's regulations on financial fair play and licensing, as well as the Premier League's regulations on profit and sustainability.

The Premier also accuses the English club of failing to provide the "necessary information and documents" for the cooperation of the investigation between 2018 and 2023. The allegations, which relate to the period between 2009 and 2018, have been referred to an independent commission, which will now investigate them. No date has been set for this.

The Manchester club was already investigated by UEFA and sanctioned for a two-year ban from European competition in 2020 for breaching financial fair play rules between 2012 and 2016. However, this sanction was lifted by the European Court of Arbitration and never came into effect. City was bought in 2008 by the Abu Dhabi investment fund, which was a spectacular financial boost for the project, which has resulted in six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, a Champions League final defeat and six League Cups in the last 15 years.
