The Portuguese was not a starter in the World Cup win over Switzerland

Portugal, who started with Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench, will face Morocco in the semi-finals. Portugal made their best performance at the Qatar 2022 World Cup and qualified for the quarter-finals after a 6-1 thrashing of Switzerland, a match that took place at the Lusail Stadium and in which Cristiano Ronaldo started on the substitutes' bench.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos was surprised to unveil his starting XI, with Cristiano not appearing and having been reproached for being replaced during the match against South Korea, to give way to Gonçalo Ramos. It was the Benfica striker who opened the scoring in the 17th minute, firing a great shot past Yonn Sommer after a pass from Joao Felix. Early in the second half, Gonçalo Ramos scored his second goal, tapping the ball between the Swiss goalkeeper's legs from Diogo Dalot's cross to make it 3-0.

In the 55th minute, just five minutes later, the fourth came through Raphael Guerreiro, another of the changes made by Fernando Santos, a coach who has been criticised but who today got everything right. Switzerland got the equaliser in the 57th minute, almost accidentally as the same Gonçalo Ramos, who was everywhere, combed the ball and left only defender Manuel Akanji, who only had to push it into the back of the net. Gonçalo Ramos, in the 67th minute, headed the ball past goalkeeper Sommer for his hat-trick to make it 5-1.

In the 72nd minute, Gonçalo Ramos left the field for Cristiano Ronaldo, who had been asked to come on from the stands and had a goal disallowed for a clear offside. In stoppage time, Rafael Leao scored to make it 6-1 with a beautiful finish to seal the win for the Portuguese. Finally, with this victory, Portugal will now play in the quarter-finals against Morocco, the great revelation of the tournament, who previously beat Spain on penalties.

Luis Diaz is back at Liverpool

One of the biggest doubts that were generated moments before the last match of the round of 16 between Portugal and Switzerland was the lack of Cristiano Ronaldo in the starting eleven of the Lusitanians, because although the performance of the former Manchester United player has not been the best even in Qatar, nobody doubted that one of his geniuses on the pitch will qualify his team to the next stage. Meanwhile, Luis Diaz has returned to Liverpool after a knee injury that kept him out of action for several weeks.
