Mac Allister Joins Konaté on Disciplinary Tightrope After Liverpool's Win Over Lille
Mac Allister joined Konaté in walking a disciplinary tightrope after being booked during added time at the end of the 2-1 victory over Lille at Anfield on Tuesday night which booked a place in the knockout stages for Arne Slot’s side. The Liverpool midfielder has already missed one game in the league phase – last month’s 1-0 win at Girona – having picked up three yellow cards during the earlier stages of the competition.
UEFA rules dictate that every second booking after reaching that threshold, meaning the fifth, seventh, ninth and so on, will result in another one-match ban. Mac Allister currently has four bookings.
The amnesty for yellow cards only comes into effect after the quarter-finals have been completed, meaning both Mac Allister and Konaté will have to negotiate five more matches – the final group stage clash against PSV Eindhoven next week, along with both legs of the round of 16 and potentially the quarter-finals – before the cards are no longer counted. With Liverpool only needing a point in Holland to secure top spot, it is possible neither Konaté – who was an unused substitute against Lille – nor Mac Allister will be risked with the Reds already qualified for the round of 16.
Mac Allister has also served a one-match ban in the Premier League after reaching five bookings in the top flight, with Dominik Szoboszlai and Darwin Núñez receiving similar suspensions during the past month.
With the domestic season having passed the halfway point, the Premier League’s amnesty has switched to a two-match ban for reaching 10 yellow cards after 32 matches, while there is a three-match ban for a total of 15 at any point in the campaign.
