Since the failure of the previous season after which we must be at least a year without playing in the Champions League, Jürgen Klopp and the Anfield board decided to prioritize the recruitment of young midfielders, as the German tactician had already decided at that time to get rid of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita.
Very early in the transfer window, our Liverpool secured the arrival of Alexis Mac Allister who, after a truly fantastic 2022-2023 season in which he was crowned world champion with Argentina at Qatar 2022, joined the club. His signing excited the Anfield fans as it was said that the Argentine would be the first of several reinforcements to join the team this summer.
However, things have not turned out as expected as despite the fact that we managed to secure our second signing in Dominik Szoboszlai, we have had many more departures than arrivals this summer and above all the two most important departures have been those of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, who left a big hole in the team and have caused the Anfield board to have the urgency to sign Romeo Lavia, as they consider him the ideal player for the future and the present of the club.
That is why Liverpool seems to be willing to spend a fortune to bring him to Anfield. Southampton are asking for £50 million, but the Reds seem to want to sign him for £40 million. Negotiations are still ongoing, but it seems that Liverpool's urgency to buy is greater than Southampton's urgency to sell, especially as the transfer window is nearing its end. That is why Klopp may have to start looking within the squad to find replacements for Fabinho and Henderson.
In Liverpool's last two pre-season games it has been Curtis Jones who has played as a number six and to be honest he has done very well. However, his good performances do not seem to be enough for Jürgen Klopp to consider him as first choice to play in that position at the start of the new season, even though Jones himself has said that he feels comfortable playing there. "I'm playing in a deeper role but it's kind of the same thing. It's a chance for me to get on the ball and try to control the pace on the pitch," he said.
