Liverpool posted one of the worst-ever major final performances in the club's history to ensure a dreadful League Cup final reverse against Newcastle United. Dan Burn and Alexander Isak scored either side of half-time as not even a late Federico Chiesa consolation could disguise a dismal Reds display that ended in a 2-1 defeat at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
The result means Arne Slot must wait for his first honour as Reds boss with his team 12 points clear at the Premier League summit with nine games now remaining.
Claimed a few crosses during a somewhat quiet first half and distribution reasonable, but no chance with either Newcastle goal. Some good stops second half.
Jarell Quansah 7
One heavy touch that almost let in Isak aside, stuck to his task up against Barnes and one decent foray forward first half. Didn’t let anyone down when switching to a variety of positions late on.
Ibrahima Konate 6
Mixed bag with some necessary clearances allied to cheaply gifting Newcastle the ball out from the back. Subbed after Liverpool went two down.
Virgil van Dijk 8
Dominated Isak before break, particularly in the air, and defended on front foot relentlessly. The only Liverpool starter who approached his usual level and spent much of the last 15 minutes playing nearer the Newcastle box.
Andy Robertson 5
Two good blocks to deny Isak and Trippier and at least attempted to inject some energy into Liverpool’s play, but beaten by Murphy at far post for second Newcastle goal.
Ryan Gravenberch 4
Another worrying below-par before interval in which he seemed jaded both in mind and body. Shifted to centre-back for much of the second half. Subbed.
Alexis Mac Allister 5
At least tried to get Liverpool going with his passing but too easily knocked off ball on occasion and shouldn’t really be marking Burn at corners. Subbed.
Mohamed Salah 3
Rarely involved with Liverpool’s attacks mainly coming down the left, and unable to do much with possession. Can rarely have been so ineffective.
Dominik Szoboszlai 5
Showed intent in the opening minutes but then disappeared almost completely first half. Involved a bit more after interval, but not enough.
Luis Diaz 4
More promise than end product and found it difficult to get beyond Trippier. Lacked quality at key moments. Subbed.
Diogo Jota 3
Not much decent service and left to fend for himself among the big Newcastle centre-backs, but should have done better with one half-chance. Subbed.
Darwin Nunez (for Jota 57) 4
One heavy touch inside the area and then extremely anonymous.
Curtis Jones (for Konate 57) 5
Shot saved by Pope and brought some energy to Liverpool efforts. Over with another effort.
Cody Gakpo (for Mac Allister 67) 4
Put one cross in but clearly unfit.
Federico Chiesa (for Gravenberch 74) 7
