Mikel Arteta's Pathetic Excuses for Liverpool
Liverpool seemed to be going through a rough patch, and for 90 minutes against Brentford on Saturday, it appeared that this slump would continue. However, substitute Darwin Núñez saved the day for the Reds by scoring a brace in stoppage time, rescuing three points for his team.
On the other hand, Arsenal was unable to maintain their four-point lead, letting a two-goal advantage slip away to draw with Aston Villa at the Emirates. Following this disappointing result, Mikel Arteta provided some excuses that were not well received by fans or the media.
Arteta’s Excuses
After the frustrating draw with Villa, Arteta was asked about the widening gap between his team and Liverpool at the top of the table. The Spanish manager quickly pointed to his lack of depth in the squad as one of the main reasons for the unsatisfactory result. In his defense, Arteta highlighted that it was Liverpool’s substitutes who made the difference, helping the Reds win the match.
However, the comparison between the squads of both teams came off as ironic to many, considering the spending differences between Arsenal and Liverpool over the past five seasons. According to Football Transfers, Arteta’s team has spent a net €539.9 million since the 2020/21 season, while Liverpool has only spent €257.9 million in the same period.
