Klopp receives worst news just after winning Carabao Cup title

Virgil van Dijk popped up late on to head Liverpool to their 10th English League Cup title with a 1-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. The centre-back's header in the 28th minute of extra time settled a tense duel that ended 0-0 in normal time.

Liverpool cemented their place as the most successful club in the history of the cup competition. Jurgen Klopp won his eighth trophy and the Liverpool manager said in passing that he will not complete his final season in charge empty-handed. Klopp said he is living every moment to the full and enjoying watching a new generation of Liverpool players who will represent his legacy as he leaves.

"I am delighted. What I saw today was so exceptional, maybe we won't see it again. It's not because I'm the one on the bench, it's because these things don't happen in football. In my 20-plus years this is easily the most special trophy I've won. It's absolutely exceptional," he added. Klopp will step down at the end of the season, but the League Cup win keeps his Liverpool side in the running for an unprecedented four titles.

The bad news of the match was the injuries to Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo, both of whom were forced to wear orthopaedic boots for the celebrations. Both are ruled out of Wednesday's FA Cup game against Southampton and are also doubtful for the game against Nottingham Forest the following Saturday.
