Brazilian striker Roberto Firmino joined Al-Ahli on a free transfer following his departure from Liverpool, the Saudi Arabian side said on Tuesday. "I always played for big teams, now I'm at Al-Ahli," the South American footballer said in a video shared on the Saudi club's Twitter account.
The 31-year-old will team up with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, who also left the Premier League after three seasons at Chelsea. Firmino joined Liverpool in 2015 and helped the team win the Champions League, FA Cup and Premier League titles. The Brazil international bid farewell to Anfield at the end of May, scoring his 111th goal for the club during his final game of the season.
Saudi Arabia is full of big-name players
Firmino joins a long list of high-profile players who have moved to the Saudi professional league in recent weeks, with names such as Ballon d'Or winner Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kante and Ruben Neves following in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo, who moved to Al-Nassr in January.
While Firmino has already signed in Arabia and reports from Germany claim that Sadio Mané will not remain at Bayern Munich and will also move to the Middle East, there is another former Liverpool player who won everything with the Reds and will now move to this exotic league. This is Alex Oxlade Chamberlain who according to several reports from local journalists will continue his career in this league where Steven Gerard and Robbie Fowler are also already coaches.
