We finally got to see our Liverpool in action again, as the first game of the 2023-2024 Premier League season ended in a one-goal draw at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea. This game was the team's first official look after last season in which we failed to qualify for the Champions League of this new campaign.
Although the team managed to get a point away against the Blues, many doubts have been left in the air after seeing the team's performance. It has become clear, for example, that we urgently need at least one quality defensive midfielder who can complement the good work done by Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai in the team's midfield. In addition, a new central defender is also needed, because although it would be unfair to say that Virgil van Dijk or Ibrahima Konaté had a bad game, it is no secret that they score goals too easily.
Now, we have to keep in mind that this was only the first game of the season and, as Klopp rightly said, this does not define our future. Besides, we must remember that there are still players to join the club this summer and as the Premier League progresses we will be able to see the development of the team and if we really have what it takes to compete for the Premier League title again.
The next test that Liverpool will have seems to be, in theory, a much simpler one than the one we had against Chelsea, as we will be playing at home, at Anfield, with our fans and perhaps with a new reinforcement depending on how the next week develops in that aspect.
Our Liverpool will face Bournemouth at Anfield next Saturday, August 19, in what will be the second game of the season. In the last fifteen games we have played against this opponent, we have 12 wins and one draw. We'll see if the Reds' board has managed to sign a new midfielder by then. Will it be Lavia, Caicedo or someone else?
