Our Liverpool finally made their 2023-2024 Premier League debut, and did so with a one-goal draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. It was a game that started very well for the Reds, but as the game progressed they lost control of the game and we came very close to going away with no points on our debut of the campaign, something that caused annoyance among some players like Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander-Arnold, who was recently named vice captain of the team, played the entire game against Chelsea and has been singled out by some fans as one of the culprits for the Blues' equalizing goal. In addition, there was another very similar play where once again Trent was caught short of the mark and had it not been for offside, Chelsea would have scored the second goal of the game.
However, according to Trent Alexander-Arnold himself, pressing high is one of the instructions he has been given over the last couple of seasons, so when the opposition attacks it becomes difficult to get back to defend. "I have always been told for the past couple of seasons to press high. It is easier to transition but if they get out it is a long way back."
However, our vice captain believes he has the answer as to why he did not look entirely comfortable during the game, especially in the second half where Chelsea had the more important chances and our Liverpool stopped creating danger. This is what Alexander-Arnold had to say about his annoyance after drawing in the Premier League opener against a team that couldn't even enter European competitions last season.
After the match against Chelsea that ended in a draw, Trent Alexander-Arnold said that he would feel more comfortable playing as a midfielder, but that ultimately it is not his decision but Klopp's. "It's something I'd be up for. It's something I'd enjoy playing, but it's not my decision. If and when that decision does come then I'm sure I'll learn on the job and try and make it work," he said. He also detailed that he can control the game better from his role as a midfielder, so we will see if Klopp keeps using him as a right-back or if he eventually decides to use him in midfield again.
