The pitch at the Al Bayt stadium in Al Khor witnessed a young England fall at the hands of reigning world champions France. With a fearful brand of football lacking in variety, Gareth Southgate died with his formation, where he dispensed with players who could have given the tie a different face, Liverpool FC star Trent Alexander-Arnold being one of those players who made the bench.
The 24-year-old defender was dropped by the arrogant English manager who only used Trent in one game, giving him just 35 minutes of action in the Group B matchday 3 game before the Welsh. Trent had little chance to enjoy what was only his second World Cup in his professional career, the Russia 2018 edition he played the same number of games, or one, as 2022.
Klopp's fury after England's World Cup exit to France
It was with mixed feelings that the Liverpool defender spoke after the Three Lions' elimination, where he expressed his pain and frustration at not being able to contribute more on the pitch for his team-mates. Trent looked incredulous as England captain Harry Keane threw away the last hope of extending the game against France to add another four years to the British World Cup drought.
Alexander-Arnold, who came through the ranks of the Reds, was chosen by Southgate for this World Cup, not knowing that he would be practically erased from the decisions of a coach who is living his second spell at the helm, where although England have had good moments in tournaments such as the European Championship, they have also left through the back door in the UEFA Nations League and now the World Cup.
With the conclusion of the World Cup for England, Trent as well as his teammates broke ranks to travel back to training with their respective teams, who are in friendly matches prior to the resumption of their schedules, where some will be active until next year and others, like Trent, will be with the EFL Cup and Premier League games.
