Liverpool, with a brace from Dutchman Cody Gakpo and goals from Colombia's Luis Diaz and Egypt's Mohamed Salah, thrashed LASK Linz 4-0 at Anfield to secure their place in the last 16 of the Europa League with a game to spare. Jurgen Klopp's side lived up to their billing as favourites and will finish top of Group E, which is completed by Toulouse and St. Gilloise.
Luis Diaz opened the scoring in the 12th minute and four minutes later Gakpo scored the second. At the start of the second half, Salah scored from the penalty spot to seal the win, which Gakpo rounded off in stoppage time. Liverpool, with four wins and just one defeat, moved four points clear of Toulouse and secured top spot in Group E which takes them straight into the last 16. LASK can still finish third.
Klopp's side were calm enough to extend their lead in the 54th minute when Mohamed Salah's penalty brought the curtain down on the game, and Gakpo's powerful strike from the spot put the game beyond doubt. At 56', the German coach decided to bring on Uruguayan Darwin Núñez for Díaz, which led to a very affectionate embrace between the two, which went viral on social media and demonstrates the great relationship between the two.
Liverpool are now through to the last 16 of the Europa League as they await the round of 32 in March where the second place finishers from each group will play against the third place finishers from the Champions League groups. Manchester United could be in with a chance of meeting Liverpool in a match in which the Reds would be overwhelming favourites.
