It was a painful defeat but not a major problem for Liverpool and German coach Jürgen Klopp's plan as Thursday's Europa League group-stage defeat to Saint Gilloise in Belgium did not cause a major problem and the team finished top of the group as well as helping to save the stars for Sunday's game against Manchester United.

While Mohamed Salah, Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander Arnold did not even make the trip to Brussels, other players such as Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz appeared on the bench to make way for youngsters such as Ben Doak and Kaide Gordon, who are the team's promising players and have so far had little involvement due to the saturation of attackers in the squad.

Despite the defeat, Liverpool achieved the objective of advancing directly to the last 16 of the Europa League and rested several of their stars, especially thinking about Sunday's game at Anfield where they will host Manchester United, where they will be looking to stay top of the Premier League and beat their arch rivals.

Klopp's message

This was also combined with the strong message that the German coach Jürgen Klopp gave after the game in which although he accepted that his team did not play well, he also highlighted the participation of young players as well as the rest of other players in a clear and direct message to Manchester United: "We all saw the same game, a deserved win for USG. First goal might be offside but we couldn't see that, who cares? A strong side who are top of the league. We gave it a proper game in the end."
