It seems that what was a need in the background might have become the new top priority for Jürgen Klopp and our Liverpool, as it had been reported for weeks that, in addition to looking for a midfielder, the Anfield board was in search of a new defender and now, with Ibrahima Konaté's injury, it could become an absolute necessity for Liverpool.

Ahead of the game against Newcastle, Jürgen Klopp broke the bad news and detailed that Konaté is doubtful for this weekend's game at St. James Park due to a muscle injury. "Ibou is doubtful... Playing 40 minutes with 10 men didn't help," said Klopp, referring to Alexis Mac Allister's unfair dismissal and attributing Konaté's injury in part to the physical strain of playing a man down against Bournemouth.

That is why Klopp will now have to think about who will play in Konaté's place this weekend in the third Premier League game of the season if the Frenchman is ultimately unable to play. The options are obvious and there are only two, either Joel Matip or Joe Gomez. Both have lacked minutes during the first two games of the season and it seems that Klopp is not as confident in them, as reports point to Liverpool being on the lookout for a new central defender.

The three options Klopp would have to strengthen the defense

For now there are three names that in recent hours have sounded to strengthen the defense of our Liverpool. Perhaps the most heard is the Ecuadorian Piero Hincapie, from Bayer Leverkusen who could leave for a price close to £60 million and who seems to be Klopp's favorite to arrive at Anfield. The name of Arthur Theate has also been mentioned, who according to journalist David Lynch could leave Rennes for a price close to £30 million. Finally, another option would be Feyenoord's David Hancko, who according to François Plateau, would have a transfer price of around £40 million.
