Liverpool were clearly disadvantaged this weekend in their game against Tottenham, when the VAR did not validate a legal goal by Luis Diaz, which the linesman had disallowed for alleged offside. The Premier League acknowledged the human error and those in charge of the video refereeing in that game distanced themselves from the upcoming matches. The Reds claimed "sporting integrity" had been damaged by the disallowed legal goal against Diaz in last weekend's league game against the London club, adding that it would "explore options".
"We understand the pressures under which referees work, but these pressures are supposed to be relieved, not increased, by the existence of VAR. It is unsatisfactory that not enough time was given for the correct decision to be made and therefore there was no intervention. These failures have been categorised as 'human failure' and this is unacceptable. We look forward to a review with full transparency," Liverpool said in a statement.
"This is vital for confidence in future decisions and applies to all clubs so that these situations do not happen again. In the meantime, we will explore the range of options available, given that a solution is needed," it added. Liverpool ended up losing the game against Tottenham, in which they played from the 25th minute with ten men, due to Curtis Jones' dismissal, and with nine for the last half hour due to Diogo Jota's red card.
The other bad news for Liverpool in this match was the injury to Cody Gakpo, although Jurgen Klopp can rest assured that according to various reports, the knee injury is not too serious and he will be back after the international break, i.e. for the game against Everton on 24 October.
