France beat Morocco in the second semi-final of Qatar 2022 by a score of 2-0 to go into the final match of the tournament to defend their Russia 2018 crown and, in the process, break a 'curse' in which no world champion reached the final of the next World Cup. Brazil, champions in 1994, were able to reach the 1998 final, becoming the last champion team to go all the way to the next final to defend their championship.
The Didier Deschamps-led side go into the Qatar final in impressive fashion, as despite being hit by injuries, they were able to keep six of the starting 11 they used in the Russia 2018 final against Croatia, with Hugo Lloris, Lucas Hernandez, Raphael Varane, Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappé and Olivier Giroud being the core that Les Bleus have used in both World Cups.
Mbappé to play in World Cup final and his decision to go to Liverpool
He's humiliating Mbappé in World Cup semi-final, Klopp wants to sign him for 20million
France have a date with history this Sunday in the final against Argentina, as well as looking to stop Lionel Messi winning the coveted World Cup title in his last game in this type of tournament, they will try to become the first two-time World Cup winners since Brazil did it in Chile 1962, when they were champions in Sweden 1958 under the guidance of one of the best of all time: Pelé.
Italy in 1934 and 1938 became the first nation to win two consecutive World Cups and it took 24 years after that for Brazil to join the elite club, since when no other nation has achieved the feat. Brazil, champions at USA 1994, reached the final of France 1998, losing 3-0 to the hosts, and was the last defending champion to reach the next final. Will France be the same as the Verdeamarelos, or will they be the third two-time champion in history?
One of France's standout players was Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté, who filled in for Upamecano and did so in fine style. His display places him as one of the best defenders in the world. This will mean that Virgil Van Dijk no longer has to worry about doing everything for Liverpool and will finally have a quality partner in the side of Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.
