The name Srdjan Bajcetic (Zrenjanin, 7-11-1971) will immediately spring to mind for fans of mid-90s football. The Serbian midfielder, trained in Vojvodina, joined Celta in 1994. In three seasons at Balaídos he played 29 games, scored three goals and put down roots. In Spain, Stefan Bajcetic Maquieira (Vigo, 22-10-2004) was born and raised. Srdjan's son swapped Celta for Liverpool in the winter transfer window and can already boast of having made history with the Reds.
In the 9-0 win over Bournemouth he became the youngest non-British player (17 years, 10 months and 5 days) to make his debut with the 'Pool' in the Premier League. There is an even more relevant fact. His introduction against Ajax (2-1) - he replaced Thiago Alcántara in the 94th minute - makes him the youngest player (17 years, 10 months and 22 days) to make his debut in the Champions League with the Reds. The record set by Billy Koumetio (18 years and 25 days) in 2020 is now a thing of the past.
Jürgen Klopp's long Liverpool recruitment wish list
Luis Diaz is already one of the most expensive players in the world
"It's a dream come true to make my Champions League debut with such an important victory and such an incredible atmosphere, again, at Anfield. Maestro Thiago," Stefan wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of himself celebrating the win with the Spanish-Brazilian midfielder. MARCA immediately contacted his father, Srdjan: "I am very proud, but, more than for the debut and the record, for how he is and how he has evolved in recent years. Not only on a football level. The idea for him to go to Liverpool was also to develop as a person, to become independent, to learn a new language. It was also good for him to get to know a different kind of football, much more dynamic.
Srdjan Bajcetic, a former player with Vojvodina, Celta, Red Star and Braga, among others, is amazed at the leap his son has made at Anfield. "We were surprised that he went to pre-season, then he has continued to train regularly with the first team and now he has made his debut. It's true that Liverpool's large number of injured players has helped him." Srdjan, however, prefers to be cautious: "It's a small step forward. There are countless youth players who make their debut for a team and then fail to establish themselves. I just hope that he is happy and that he doesn't have any injuries that prevent him from developing his career normally".
The most important change has to do, curiously, with Stefan Bajcetic's position on the pitch. "It is true that the position of defensive pivot at Liverpool is very specific, very positional. Fabinho is practically a central midfielder who plays in midfield. Srdjan would prefer not to have to define his son, but, at MARCA's insistence, he finally agrees: "He is a centre-back with very good ball control. He reads the game well defensively, intercepts, presses forward, filters passes...".
