Leeds ended their run of four straight English Premier League defeats by beating Liverpool 2-1 thanks to Crysencio Summerville's 89th-minute goal at Anfield on Saturday, easing the pressure on manager Jesse Marsch. While Leeds climbed out of the relegation zone after their first win since August, Liverpool remained marooned in mid-table and eight points off the top four in what is proving a difficult season for Jurgen Klopp's side.

The Reds recovered from conceding a bizarre opening goal in the fourth minute when goalkeeper Alisson Becker slipped as he tried to reach team mate Joe Gomez's pass across the face of the box. Leeds striker Rodrigo pounced and had the simpler task of tapping into an empty net. Mohamed Salah volleyed home from Andrew Robertson's cross on the left in the 14th minute. Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier made a series of great saves before Summerville latched on to a pass inside the box from Patrick Bamford and, when Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk pulled back, he slammed a shot beyond Alisson.

If Thiago keeps getting injured, here's the replacement Liverpool are ready to sign

It was the first time Liverpool had lost in front of a capacity crowd at Anfield since April 2017 - the team were beaten at home during the pandemic when fans were not allowed - and the result added to Klopp's woes, with his team struggling with injuries and possibly fatigued amid a busy schedule that includes the Champions League.

Liverpool are in ninth place with 16 points from 12 games. For Leeds, it was the first win away from home, and Marsch looked emotional after the final whistle as he walked onto the pitch and congratulated his players before celebrating in front of the visiting fans. Marsch has said he retains the backing of the board, who should be impressed by the way the Leeds players fought for their coach.

Klopp almost walked onto the pitch

It was in the second half when Andy Robertson had a run-in with Leeds player Tyler Adams that German coach Jürgen Klopp almost ran onto the pitch to try to calm him down and get him away from Adams and avoid further trouble. Klopp has had serious problems with referees because of his aggressive attitudes and recently had to pay a large amount of money in fines, and this action with Robertson could cost him again.
