Liverpool completed this summer transfer window with four new signings. The departures of Fabinho and Henderson left a gap in the team that needed to be addressed as soon as possible. The competition was not going to be easy, and Klopp's team was aware of it.
Nonetheless, many decided to trust the board and wait for the signings to gradually arrive. Following the approach of other teams, the Reds were willing to spend significant amounts of money, as seen in the failed signings of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.
Nevertheless, things got out of control after their refusals to come to Anfield. The issue here is that Liverpool suffered more from these refusals than other clubs because the deal was practically closed for Caicedo to be presented at the AXA Training Centre within days, as they have received their most recent signings.
According to Yahoo UK and Fabrizio Romano, for approximately 12 hours, Caicedo's transfer was secured, and the necessary documents were being prepared. Moreover travel plans were made for him to undergo medical tests. However, at the last moment, the 21-year-old player backed out and chose to join Chelsea instead. It's worth noting that, according to Romano, this surprised Jurgen Klopp, who had confirmed in a press conference Liverpool's interest and details about the on-going negotiation. According to various national and international media outlets, Liverpool was willing to pay £109 million for the Ecuadorian international, which would have been the most expensive signing in the club's history.
