Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that the club have reached an agreement to sign midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton: "I can confirm that the deal [Moises Caicedo] with the club is closed, whatever that means in the end," Klopp told a news conference on Friday. The Merseyside club appear to have beaten Premier League rivals Chelsea to sign the 21-year-old midfielder.

Reports say the deal to bring Caicedo to Anfield is worth £111 million ($141 million), which would be a British record for a player. "Of course, we want the player and not just the deal. We don't have an infinite time," the German manager said. Klopp has previously criticised teams who spend a lot of money on transfers, but said the transfer market changed: "We didn't expect a couple of things to happen during the summer, but when that happened, we tried. Let's see what happens and go from there."

He added: "Everything changed. Do I like it? No. Did I realise I was wrong? Yes," Klopp said. "I don't blame anyone, but it's just the market. At the end of the day, we as a club have to make sure that, with our resources, we get the best possible player. We are not in a dream country and we can't pretend that we can't get the best possible player.

It would not reach

However, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the deal fell through at the last minute because although Liverpool and Brighton reached a financial agreement, the player finally decided not to sign for Liverpool and preferred to go to Chelsea: “Moisés Caicedo has just informed Liverpool that he only wants to join Chelsea! Caicedo has decided to keep his word and only accept Chelsea as personal terms were agreed since end of May. Chelsea, set to bid again in order to get deal done with Brighton”, he said.
