England striker Harry Kane was one of the stars of the Qatar 2022 World Cup quarter-final against France. As well as scoring the only goal for Southgate's England side, the England star became his team's top scorer, equalling Wayne Rooney's 53 goals.
However, he was also involved in an unfortunate action that denied the Three Lions an equaliser with five minutes of the 90 minutes remaining when he missed a penalty that could have made it 2-2 and stretched the tie into extra time. A day after being eliminated from the world's greatest football tournament, the 29-year-old took to his social media to send a message to fans: "Totally gutted.
Germany decides on Hansi Flick's future, Jürgen Klopp guilty
Here's what Klopp will do to make up for Luis Diaz's absence
"We gave everything and it came down to a small detail that I take responsibility for. There's no way to hide it, it hurts and it will take some time to get over, but that's part of sport," the England captain lamented, adding: "Now it's about using the experience to be mentally and physically stronger for the next challenge. Thank you for all the support throughout the tournament, it means a lot."
After the end of the match, and with sadness in the air, Harry Kane took "responsibility, as captain and as the one who missed the penalty" that could have forced extra time against France (1-2), in the quarter-finals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, while commenting that he will have "to live with it and take it on board. I felt confident shooting it, I just didn't execute it the way I wanted to," he said of his miss from 11 yards in which he had previously scored the equaliser after 54 minutes. "The team is in a good moment, with players in their best form, and there will be good moments in the future. Now we're very angry that it's over because we were convinced we could go all the way," he said.
On the other hand, Liverpool had their first game in Dubai as part of their pre-season training camp. They played Lyon of France and lost on penalties where Ramsay missed his spot-kick. However, everyone showed determination in taking the spot-kick by showing Harry Kane how it should be taken every time a player is stopped on the penalty spot.
