The collateral damage of Liverpool's new signing in the shape of Dutchman Cody Gakpo, has moved things inside the club, to begin with within his strike partners, where Gakpo will fight for a place in Jürgen Klopp's starting eleven, and his direct European competition is in the carioca Roberto Firmino, whose contract expires this year and whose renewal is up in the air.

Roberto Firmino, who arrived at Anfield in 2015 from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, is part of the Reds' last great trident, the one that won it all, and which since last summer has been fractured with the departure of Sadio Mané to German football with Bayer Munich. Bobby has had ups and downs, with Tite's non-call-up for the Qatar World Cup the one the striker felt most keenly as he looked forward to representing Brazil again on a world stage.

With the pain at his own expense, Firmino put the matter behind him and travelled with the club to Dubai for the Reds' tour of the United Arab Emirates, where he played against Olympique Lyon and AC Milan. Bad news came for the Brazilian when a muscle injury kept him off the field, keeping him on tenterhooks as it is still unclear when he will be able to return to play. The situation is getting more complicated for Bobby as, with this injury, the board of directors are not looking favourably on his renewal.

Reports from England reveal that Jürgen Klopp and Roberto Firmino have already had talks, being Liverpool and him in the technical direction, who want him to stay for a while longer at the club. The German also ruled out that the rumours surrounding the arrival of latest Dutch gem Cody Gakko could have an impact on the Brazilian's future at Anfield. At least in Klopp's plan is to play both in attack.

Firmino may not renew

For now Firmino continues to recover as he awaits a clean bill of health to help his team-mates in the second half of the 22/23 season, which is sorely needed as the Reds are currently out of European competition places, so the chance to add to their tally and keep climbing the ladder comes this weekend's matchday 18 clash with Leicester City at Anfield.
