Southgate's failure to field Trent Alexander Arnold criminal, harsh criticism after USA draw

Although England remain unbeaten and still top of their group after two games, it is clear that the goalless draw against the United States left manager Gareth Southgate with a host of doubts, which he will have to resolve more calmly in the analysis of the match that he and his coaching staff will surely make in the hours that follow, looking for the mistake that did not lead them to another victory during those 90 minutes.

Perhaps the first data that his analysis will show will indicate that there was a great disorder in the central defence with John Stones, something similar happening with Jude Bellingham and Mason Mount in midfield, seeing correct but late those adjustments that he made in the second half, because although he managed to advance lines and play more on the rival midfield, that push was never enough to gain an advantage, perhaps finding there a mistake in not having used an element as offensive as Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The changes had made the Stars and Stripes delay lines and let the English play more with the ball under control, with attacking without much concern in defence being one of the main virtues that at least Klopp has been able to exploit in his players, a situation that did not arise with Souhtgate at the helm, not risking at least 20 minutes with that proposal and preferring to settle for a goalless scoreline.

The evidence that the North American team is not capable of sustaining 90 minutes of intensity was seen in their debut against Wales, who pushed them into their own area and to the point of making the mistake that led to Gareth Bale's equaliser from the penalty spot.  That speed, depth and freshness of attacking play would have been gained by the England manager with Alexander-Arnold on the pitch, but his preference even in the bad times remains with Kieran Trippier, a defender who was easily overrun whenever Christian Pulisic and company decided to do damage.

While it's true that the Newcastle United player brings a great deal of defensive security to the Three Lions side that you don't get with Arnold, the reality is that the Reds player had done a great job in Liverpool's games playing less aggressively and looking after his position,  Klopp himself showed that his player could easily adapt to the needs of the group, a quality that Gareth Southgate did not take into account for this match, costing England a draw that complicates things a little for the final matchday against Wales.
