Liverpool failed to come from behind to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League last-16 rematch on Wednesday night and lost 1-0 on aggregate, making it 6-2 to the Spaniards. This is a blow to the club and an incentive to clean up the squad for next season with a view to getting back to being a contender for the European Cup.

Due to injuries to Jordan Henderson and Stefan Bajcetic, Jurgen Klopp had to make changes to the line-up, starting James Milner and Portuguese striker Diogo Jota, but both players had little impact during the game, while in attack Cody Gakpo and Darwin Nunez came on for Egypt's Mohamed Salah.

Despite the hopes of eliminating Real Madrid and qualifying for the quarter finals of the Champions League, Liverpool's participation in this season's European Cup is over and now the only thing left to think about is the next season, although for that they will have to clean up the squad in order to get back to being a competitive team.

<strong>The clear out</strong>

In addition to Roberto Firmino there are other players who will not continue in the team for next season. They are Naby Keita, Alex Chamberlain, James Milner, Nat Phillips and Spanish goalkeeper Adrian. This will leave a gap for new players and prestigious reinforcements to return the Reds to greatness in the Premier League and Champions League.
