Liverpool winger Mohamed Salah said he is "very motivated" for February's Champions League last-16 tie against Real Madrid, also "after what happened in the 2018 final" when the two sides met and the Egyptian had to retire injured in the first half, "the worst moment" of his career.

"I'm very motivated. After what happened with Madrid last time and also after what happened in Kiev, everyone is motivated to win the Champions League. It's an incredible trophy for us and every season we fight for it since I came here, and everyone wants to fight for it," the Reds striker told a news conference.

He previously said he wanted "revenge" after the Liverpool-Real Madrid final in Kiev in 2018. Salah left the pitch in the first half through injury after a clash with Sergio Ramos in which he hurt his shoulder. Los Blancos would eventually take the trophy after winning 3-1.

"Going off injured was the worst moment of my career. It's something we talked about in the dressing room and it allowed us to go all out for the Champions League the following year," Salah said of the European title they won in 2019. For his part, Ramos had this to say: "They've given a lot of attention to the Salah issue. I didn't want to talk about it because in the end it gets magnified, but looking at the play, he grabs my arm first and I fall to the other side, in fact he injures his other arm but they say I gave him a judo key," he defended at the presentation of Mediaset's programming.

They met again in Abu Dhabi

A picture went viral on social media of Sergio Ramos greeting Mohamed Salah before the Globe Soccer Awards where the Egyptian was awarded the Player of the Year award with the Tik Tok award, beating Karim Benzema. There, far from reminiscing about what happened in 2018, they simply recognised each other as great footballers.
