Liverpool closed the Champions League group stage with a win. They beat Napoli 2-0 at Anfield with goals from Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez. This leaves the Reds with 15 points in second place in Group A as the Italians have a better goal difference. On Friday they will meet their opponents in the last 16, who will be announced in the draw.

Jürgen Klopp's side started the game determined to get the win and regain confidence after the weekend's heavy defeat at home to Leeds. The German manager made several changes to his line-up including Curtis Jones in attack and James Milner in midfield in place of the injured Jordan Henderson.

Jürgen Klopp's fury at Napoli fans' insults at Anfield

In the fifth minute, it was almost on the scoreboard when, on the halfway line, Mohamed Salah slipped the ball to Curtis Jones, who, on the left, punched the ball into the top corner of the net, but wide of goalkeeper Alex Meret. As the minutes ticked away, the Italian club looked more solid in defence and looking for counter-attacks to damage the home side, who not only needed to win to draw level on points (15) and take top spot in the group from their opponents, but to do so by four goals on the tie-breaker criteria.

Liverpool finally had a shot on target, in the 29th minute, when after a delayed, short pass, Thiago Alcántara hit a powerful, half-cleared shot from the edge of the area, but with a good save, goalkeeper Meret turned the ball behind for a throw-in. In the first minutes of the second half, James Milner came off the field, Harvey Elliott came on and so did Napoli's first goal: after a cross from a set piece, Leo Ostigard headed into the back of the net, inside the six-yard box, but the referee disallowed it for offside.

Salah shining, Firmino underperforming

Mohamed Salah's goal in the 85th minute came from a header by Darwin Núñez, who tapped in the rebound. Then before the end of the match, the Uruguayan himself scored the 2-0 also from a corner kick. Nunez came on for Roberto Firmino who was well below the expected level, unlike Salah who was Liverpool's best player.
