Salah humiliated at Anfield, failed in Premier League and now this player will miss World Cup

Germany striker Timo Werner will miss the Qatar 2022 World Cup due to an ankle injury sustained in Wednesday's UEFA Champions League match between RB Leipzig and Shakhtar Donetsk. The 26-year-old RB Leipzig player damaged his left ankle joint in his side's final Champions League group stage match, in a 4-0 win over the Ukrainian side.

Werner was injured after a tackle by Taras Stepanenko at the start of the game and left the field with just 19 minutes on the clock. The 'Toros' announced on Thursday. Medical tests in Leipzig on Thursday showed that he unfortunately tore the syndesmosis ligament in his left ankle and will therefore be out for the remainder of 2022.

Werner, scorer of 24 goals in 55 appearances for Germany, was this season back to his best after returning to the Bundesliga following an inconsistent year in the Premier League with Chelsea, where he was humiliated at Anfield and overshadowed by Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.

The German joins a long list of injured players who will miss the World Cup, including France's Paul Pogba and N'golo Kanté, both World Cup winners at Russia 2018, Portugal's Diogo Jota and Brazil's Arthur Melo. Timo Werner joined Marco Reus on the injury list for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, however, the Borussia Dortmund midfielder has a chance of making it to the global showpiece as he is already recovering.

Werner flopped in the Premier League

Meanwhile, there are several players who could be out of the World Cup, which kicks off on Sunday 20 November, including Mexico's Raúl Jiménez and Jesús 'Tecatito' Corona, Belgium's Romelu Lukaku, Argentina's Paulo Dybala, Uruguay's Ronald Araújo, England's Kyle Walker and Reece Jamesl, Korea's Heung-Min Son, among others.
