Despite Norwegian striker Erling Haaland being the Premier League's summer transfer bombshell, Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez is the most expensive reinforcement in the English competition for the 2022-2023 season, which kicks off tomorrow with Crystal Palace's clash with Arsenal.
The six most expensive transfers were made by England's Big 6, comprising Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal, according to ESPN. Liverpool shelled out 76 million dollars for Nunez, who arrived in England after two seasons in the Portuguese Premier League with Benfica, where he scored 47 goals, 34 of them last season.
He is followed in the list by Haaland, who joined English Premier League champions Manchester City. The Citizens paid $60.9 million to acquire the former Borussia Dortmund striker, who had been with the club since 2020 and scored 85 goals in 88 games. Close behind the Norwegian star is Brazil's Richarlison, who will remain in the Premier League but no longer in the Everton shirt, from which he left to join Tottenham, who paid 58 million greenbacks. The Olympic champion with the Verdeamarela at Tokyo 2020 scored 53 goals in 152 appearances for the Toffees.
Argentina's Lisandro Martinez is tied with Richarlison in this ranking. The 24-year-old Albiceleste defender arrives from Ajax to bolster Manchester United's backline, who paid $58 million for his services. Just below him is England striker and England international Raheem Sterling, for whom Chelsea paid $56.2 million to Manchester City, where the Kingston, Jamaica, native scored 131 goals in 337 games over seven seasons.
Sixth place goes to Brazil's Gabriel Jesus, for whom Arsenal forked out $52.2m to Manchester City, where he had played since the 2016-2017 season, scoring 95 goals in 236 games and winning 11 titles. The top 10 most expensive Premier League signings for the 2022-2023 campaign are completed by Kalvin Phillips (from Leeds United to Manchester City), Kalidou Koulibaly (from Napoli to Chelsea), Sven Botman (from Lille to Newcastle) and Gianluca Scamacca (from Sassuolo to West Ham).
