The end of Ilkay Gundogan at Manchester City seems to be a certainty that both parties, the German player and the English club, are dealing with at the end of the current campaign, which is why it is of particular importance what the destination of the brilliant Turkish-German footballer could be after the end of the 22/23 campaign. And while Liverpool had appeared on the horizon, the departure of the Citizen's midfield boss has taken a new route: Xavi Hernandez's Barcelona.
It has been taken into consideration that the German coach of Liverpool has had Gundogan under his command during his time at Borussia Dortmund as a possible exit for the crack, being this relationship very good and therefore beneficial when looking for, as we say, a destination for the German player, however the player made it clear that this will not happen, and not because of the coach, but out of respect for his own citizens fans.

Klopp wants to KO Real Madrid, close to snatching signing of new Messi
"I think I can rule out that happening," Gundogan said in an interview with the German newspaper, where he gave the reasons for his rejection of the Anfield outfit: "Everyone knows how much I like and appreciate Klopp, but I've been at City for a few years. And now, as City captain, can I be a rival with Liverpool? No, I can't imagine," he argued. So the option of wearing the red shirt has been touched and sunk. Not so the blaugrana.
On the one hand, City know that Gundogan's contract is up, but they want to take it easy; but so much so that it could cost them dearly, as there are big teams who want to sign him for more than one season - that is City's unofficial proposal - and with the star sign. And Barça are at the top of the list in this respect.
So much so that he may have already tempted the skyblue ace enough to get his OK. The reason? Xavi loves Gundogan and Busquets will not be renewed; with Frenkie de Jong, Pedri and Gavi complementing him, Barça can form a hugely talented midfield. So, in a way, City are already unwittingly fighting against Barça, who give priority weight to the German player.
