It’s a big day for Darwin Nunez, as the £64m man tries to follow up his goal in the Community Shield with a Premier League debut goal for Liverpool. Should Nunez find the back of the net against Fulham, he’ll join a very select group of players. Only ten times previously has a player scored on their Premier League debut for Liverpool. From modern-day legends to bizarre loan players. Here are those ten players.
Three of the ten debut goals actually came within the last six years. Of those three, two are still in Jurgen Klopp’s current Liverpool squad. The most recent was Diogo Jota’s goal against Arsenal in September 2020. After a big transfer fee, many Liverpool fans weren’t sure what to expect from Jota.
He started exactly as he meant to go on, though, with a well-taken strike against the Gunners in a 3-1 win. Prior to that Mohamed Salah, of course, scored in his first game for Liverpool in 2017. That came as the third goal of a 3-3 draw against Watford at Vicarage Road. The first of many.
Anything Salah can do, Sadio Mane will have a go at doing, too. The Senegal international scored on his first game for The Reds away at Arsenal in 2016. A stunning goal it was, too. According to the man himself, it was perhaps even the best of his 120 Liverpool goals.
The early 2000’s were generally a disappointing time to be a Liverpool fan. But three more players did manage to score on their league debuts in that time. In 2013, Victor Moses joined Liverpool in a strange looking loan move from Chelsea. In mid-September, the Nigerian swept away some doubts by scoring on his debut against Swansea City. That was pretty much as good as it got for Moses at Liverpool.
Two-and-a-half years earlier, Luis Suarez had announced himself with his very own debut goal. The Uruguayan become known for some stunning strikes during his time at Anfield, but his goal at The Kop end against Stoke City was as scrappy as they come. Before then, it had been a full nine years since Abel Xavier scored on his first Premier League game. That came in a 6-0 rout of Ipswich Town.
The final four names on this particular list will all be well-known to fans of a certain vintage. Titi Camara had a mixed time at Anfield but got off to a great start with his first goal in August 1999. Two years before that, in May 1997, Michael Owen showed why he was so highly rated with a trademark finish on his debut against Wimbledon.
By that time, Stan Collymore was on his way out of Liverpool. Not long before, he had given early signs of justifying his record transfer fee with a sensational debut goal against Sheffield Wednesday in 1995. Finally, on 14th August 1993, Nigel Clough became the first Liverpool player to score on debut in the Premier League. Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners against Wednesday at Anfield.
