There is a strange curse that is haunting Liverpool and it is the adverse situations that are arising hours before a game starts, for although Jürgen Klopp has become a specialist in changing both his starting eleven and his tactical set-up this season, he now had to improvise just hours before his team took to the field against Nottingham Forest, having to leave out one of his first-choice midfielders and that ended up leading them to defeat at the City Ground.
Although the starting eleven was already a surprise with the number of changes Klopp made from their last game against West Ham United, the surprise was directly in midfield with the absence of Thiago Alcantara, with the Reds boss announcing that his Spanish midfielder was out of the game as he was suffering from a hate infection.
Klopp's reaction to the insults he received at the Nottingham Forest game
Cheap defender Liverpool are looking for because of injuries and Joe Gomez's poor form
This decision, taken just under seven hours before kick-off, forced Jürgen Klopp to rethink his game plan and adjust his strategies in both defence and attack, fielding in his place youngster Curtis Jones but being directly disadvantaged in the latter area as the Spain international is a man with a lot of attacking clarity if the ball is played mostly in the opposition's midfield.
The lack of the midfielder was noticeable throughout the entire match, as compared to what was achieved against the Hammers a few days ago, against Forest Klopp's team did not have a clear dominance of that sector of the field, being completely inefficient those attacks of a red offensive that had little clarity in the last meters of the rival field, turning the set piece into the only resource by which they could give a minimal sense of danger, but ended up losing 1-0 on Saturday.
If Liverpool's midfield was already depleted with the absence of Alcántara, the offense also came to resent the loss of Darwin Núñez, because beyond being the Uruguayan pointed out by his coach as an inexperienced even in the position, he gave great results in the last games he started as a starter, and now Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah could not take charge of scoring goals in their favour. It appears Alcántara's infection and Núñez's hamstring problem are not serious, and he is expected to return for their next game in midweek in the UEFA Champions League.
