"Liverpool will fight for the title', ex-star's hopeful words

It's not all doom and gloom at Liverpool after a poor start to the season. After the defeat at the hands of Napoli at the Diego Armando Maradona stadium in the Champions League group stage, there was a lot of criticism of the team led by German coach Jürgen Klopp. But there are also voices that see the Reds finishing the campaign at the top of the table and fighting for the Premier League title.

Liverpool have won just two of their six games in the Premier League. One was a 9-0 thrashing at Bournemouth and the other was a tight 2-1 win over Newcastle. However, the defeat in Italy has raised concerns among the fans, most of whom think that this year will not be a good one for the team and that they will not be able to fight for the titles.

There are several factors that have Liverpool at the moment. One of those is the underperformance of several of their stars such as Egyptian striker Mohamed Salah. But another situation that is affecting the Reds are the constant injuries as more than 6 players are unable to play due to medical problems, the most important ones being captain Jordan Henderson and Guinea's Naby Keita as well as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and French defender Ibrahima Konaté.

Amid such gloom, there are encouraging words for Liverpool and they come from a former star of the hated rivals. Gary Neville, who captained Manchester United for many years, told Sky Sports that despite the poor start to the season, the team is likely to finish in the top three of the Premier League and fight for the title with Manchester City and Tottenham, managed by Italian coach Antonio Conte.

“I think City, Liverpool and Tottenham will finish in the top three. I think it’ll be between Arsenal, Chelsea and United, I just think the other two are slightly better. United will have to dig in really deep to win those two games against Arsenal and Liverpool. Liverpool could’ve equalised and Arsenal were good for large parts. There’s a long way to go, if you said to me a few weeks ago they’d finish fifth I’d bite your hand off. Fifth wouldn’t be a terrible result for Manchester United and Erik ten Hag from where they were.”
